Action Steps

Notify the supervisor/manager of the person being terminated, keeping in mind that information/reasons are to be given on a need-to-know basis only.
Prepare final paycheck (payable on last day of work according to state law).
Provide information on Benefits (COBRA, Savings Plan, Retirement, 401k, Cafeteria Plan etc.).
Change security codes (building access, computer, other).
Get from employee company credit cards, keys, company vehicle etc.
Give employee any personal belongings in the workplace.
Be prepared for questions from other employees.
Prepare documentation - potential for workers' compensation, unemployment, wrongful termination, tort (libel, slander, defamation) claims.
Notify security. If you think the terminated employee has the potential for violence, revenge, consult a risk assessment professional to assess the possibility of violence. Contact law enforcement agency; take recommended action.
Contact the employee who was harassed and inform him/her that action has been taken. For reasons of privacy, confidentiality, you will not want to say what action has been taken, only that the harasser is no longer with the company.
Encourage employees to contact you if they have questions, concerns, or encounter further harassment or retaliation of any kind.
